For study and reflection, personally or with family, friends, or your small group:
To help get you started, talk about what’s in your “closet”. What’s the oldest article of clothing that you have? Do you still wear it? Look through your drawers and closets…how much do you actually wear? Take a walk through your kitchen and look in the drawers….how many spatulas do you own? Think about the different rooms in your home…which ones are people allowed in? Which rooms do you try to keep people out of? How is this like your life?
Read and discuss 1 Corinthians 6:9-11 and 1 John 1:5-2:2. How are these texts similar? How are they different? Why do we find this kind of repetition in the Bible?
Talk about the things our culture encourages (above). How have you fallen for them?
What are some of the “piles of stuff” you’re carrying around in your life?
- Some of the piles you acknowledge. How have you tried to deal with them yourself? How’s that working for you?
- There are other piles you’re probably ignoring and pretending that the don’t exist. What needs to be brought out into the light and exposed? Be courageous in the LORD and share them with your small group, asking for their help and trusting Jesus that he will clean you up.
What work do you need to allow Jesus to complete in you? What is a first step for you? How can your group help hold you accountable to this?
