For study and reflection, personally or with family, friends or your small group:
To help you get started, read the gospel accounts of the birth of Jesus found in Matthew 1:18-2:12, Luke 1:1-2:40, John 1:1-14.
From what you’ve read in these gospel accounts, put in your own words Jesus’ mission and purpose. Why was Jesus here? What was He here to accomplish?
At WestWay, we’ve frequently said, “People who forget their purpose often make life about themselves, their preferences, their power, their place and their position.”
- Read Acts 1:1-11; paying special attention to verse 7. Based on their constant questions, what was there understanding about the purpose of Jesus? How does this compare with what you read in Matthew, Luke and John?
- When are you tempted to misunderstand why Jesus came? What are some ways that those misunderstandings reveal themselves?
- When are you tempted to make life about your own preferences, your own power, your own place and your own position? How do these things get in the way of your own glad submission to God and his will for your life?
