For study and reflection, personally or with family, friends, or your small group:
To help get you started…talk about different ways you’ve experienced spiritual growth, community, accountability and service from the church. Did it come mainly through events and programming, or through individuals? Maybe a combination of the two?
Read 1 Timothy 5:3-16. What characteristics were expected of the “approved” widows? Should these be limited to widows? Why/why not?
Take time to review Section 2 of WestWay’s Membership Statement: “The Responsibility of WestWay Christian Church Members (the body, the church) to One Another”:
-
- To faithfully give of their time by assembling and participating regularly in weekly gatherings as they are physically able (Acts 2:42).
- To not neglect meeting together, but to encourage one another (Hebrews 10:24).
- To be made into disciples and obey what God has commanded (Matthew 28:19-20).
- To give of their treasure to fund and financially support the mission of WestWay Christian Church:
- To give generously (2 Corinthians 9:6).
- To give whole-heartedly and cheerfully (2 Corinthians 9:7).
- To joyfully give of their talent and serve:
- To follow the example of Jesus and serve the body (John 13:1-17).
- To motivate one another to acts of love and good works (Hebrews 10:14).
- To actively use spiritual gifts for the benefit of the body (1 Corinthians 12:1-31).
- To promote unity within the body (Ephesians 4:1-16).
- To pray for leadership and the body (1 Timothy 2:1-2).
- To faithfully give of their time by assembling and participating regularly in weekly gatherings as they are physically able (Acts 2:42).
As a group, talk about the elements of spiritual growth, community, accountability and service in the above. What are some ways that you see these things embodied (lived out) in your group? What are you missing?
As you read all of this, how are YOU doing with your responsibility and relationship with Jesus? How are you doing with your responsibility and relationship to your small group? To the church at large?
What is your next step for God regarding caring for those you are in relationship with? What is your next step in serving and caring for those with whom you are not yet in relationship with?
Did something God told you through this study unearth a commitment you need to make and be held accountable to?
